Keynote Speaker - Fran Racher PhD

Dr. Racher is a professor at the School of Health Studies at Brandon University, teaching in psychiatric nursing and nursing. Her areas of interest are rural population health, community development, gerontology, health promotion, access to health services, and philosophy of nursing. She holds a nursing diploma from Brandon General Hospital; a BScN and BA (Psychology) from Brandon University; a MSc (Community Health Sciences) from the University of Manitoba; and a PhD (Nursing) from the University of Calgary. She and her husband have raised four daughters, recently retired from farming, and delight in spending time with their six grandchildren.

Keynote Speaker - Professor Arthur Schafer

Professor Schafer is Director of the Centre for Professional and Applied Ethics, at the University of Manitoba.  He is also a Full Professor in the Department of Philosophy and an Ethics Consultant for the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.  For ten years he was Head of the Section of Bio-Medical Ethics in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Manitoba. He is a Canadian Commonwealth Scholar, Honorary Woodrow Wilson Scholar, a Canada Council Fellow.  At the University of Manitoba he has received the Stanton Teaching Excellence Award, the Campbell Award for University Outreach, and the University Teaching Service Award for Teaching Excellence.

Keynote Speaker - Dr. Adrian Wagg

Dr. Wagg qualified from the London Hospital Medical College in 1988.  He trained in General and Geriatric medicine in and around London and was appointed as a Senior Lecturer and Consultant in General Internal and Geriatric Medicine to University College London Hospitals in 1997 and then moved to Edmonton in 2010 as Chair in Healthy Ageing.  He is an Associate Director of the Clinical Effectiveness and Evaluation Unit of the Royal College of Physicians, in England where until recently he led the continence in older people programme and a national clinical effectiveness programme in continence care. 

Keynote Speaker - Howard Feldman, MD, FRCP (C)

Howard Feldman, MD, is Professor of Neurology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. He also holds academic appointments as Adjunct Professor at the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging in Montreal and at Yale University, Department of Neurology. From 2009-2011, he was granted a leave from UBC to take up the position of Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head Neurosciences Global Clinical Research at Bristol-Myers Squibb. In 2012, with his return to UBC, he has taken on the role of Executive Associate Dean Research for the UBC Faculty of Medicine.  

In his research career, Dr. Feldman has been active in epidemiological and clinical diagnostic/therapeutic studies in mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias. His seminal contributions to his research field have included landmark scientific discoveries in the genetics of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and in the advancing of diagnostic constructs and experimental methods aimed at the  treatment of early AD. He has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers and has over 300 publications. He has achieved consistent peer-reviewed funding, has lectured globally and has received numerous awards recognizing his clinical and research contributions.  He has been appointed as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (2008), and of the American Academy of Neurology (2008). His research was profiled in Lancet Neurology in 2007.

Jean Helps

Jean Helps

Jean is a Registered Dietitian whose career has focused on providing care to the elderly. Practice in the long term care setting, inpatient rehab setting and the outpatient population has provided a range of experience to facilitate an understanding of the service needs of the elderly in various settings, including the needs of those with dementia. Jean has a passion for good nutrition care at end of life. As Regional Clinical Nutrition Manager for Long Term Care in WRHA, Jean has an opportunity to promote and support good care for residents with dementia at end of life.

Dr. George C. Webster

Dr. George C. Webster

Dr. Webster works as a Clinical Ethicist with the Health Care Ethics Service at St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg. He is engaged in ethics consultation, education, policy review and development, and research with fourteen health care and social service facilities. He has served as a member of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Standing Committee on Ethics (SCE), and the Chief Public Health Officer’s Ethics Advisory Committee, Canadian Public Health Agency of Canada. He holds an appointment in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

Preetha Krishnan

Preetha Krishnan

Preetha is a long term care Nurse Practitioner, who currently provides primary care to all residents at Lions Personal Care Center and to a quarter of residents at Misericordia Place. She was awarded with the 2011 Nurse Practitioner award of excellence for her outstanding leadership in the profession and in the delivery of clinical care.

Peter Wiebe

Peter Wiebe

Peter has devoted much of his career to geriatric care. In Winkler, Manitoba he developed and managed the Salem Psychogeriatric Treatment Unit for elderly patients whose behaviour was complex for a regular health care setting. One of the goals of that unit is to find staff approaches to decrease the challenging behaviour. For his work there Peter was awarded the Clinical Practice Award for Excellence in Geriatric Nursing from a chapter of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba. To keep in touch with the “real world” he picks up casual shifts and term positions for south central Manitoba health care organizations.

Kelly Ens

Kelly Ens

Kelly is a Registered Nurse, a graduate from the St. Boniface School of Nursing. During a time when nursing jobs were hard to find, Kelly took a position on an Alzheimer Unit. Little did she know she would have found her calling. Kelly has worked at Salem Home since 1992; working in the roles of unit nurse, Resident Care Manager of the Evergreen Neighbourhood (the Dementia Care Unit) and most recently Resource Development Coordinator. She is heavily involved in teaching Salem Home’s in-house Resident Care Attendant Program, Aggression Management, QUIS-EH-O, and numerous other inservices within the Home.

Lindy Stanford

Lindy Stanford

Lindy graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1997 with a Bachelor of Social Work Degree. She has worked in a variety of healthcare settings and is currently part of the Geriatric Resource Team in the Geriatric Program at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. Lindy believes strongly in the concept of recovery and works closely with patients in the Geriatric Program to help them set and achieve their recovery goals.

Jacquie Williams

Jacquie Williams

Jacquie graduated from the School of Psychiatric Nursing in 1992 and has spent the last 20 years as a Psychiatric Nurse at the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. As part of the Geriatric Resource Team, Jacquie assists patients and their families to navigate the difficult journey of dementia, while believing that some form of recovery is possible for all patients.

Dr. Galit Hasdan

Dr. Galit Hasdan

Dr. Hasdan graduated from Tver State Medical Academy, Russia in 1989. She completed Family Medicine residency program and fellowship in Care of the Elderly at the University of Manitoba. Currently, she works with the geriatric program of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in the Geriatric Rehabilitation units at St. Boniface Hospital and Seven Oaks Geriatric Day Hospital, and in the Special Care Unit at Deer Lodge Center and other Personal Care Homes in Winnipeg. Dr. Hasdan is a faculty member with the Family Medicine program of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

Deb Kostyk

Deb Kostyk

Deb is the provincial older adult and gambling prevention education consultant at the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) since 1999. She also provides prevention education services related to older adults and substance addiction and carries an active caseload of older adults with addiction issues aged 60 years and olderShe served on the National Advisory Committee for the Public Health Agency of Canada project, Seeking Solutions. She implemented the first treatment program in Manitoba for substance addicted older adults from 1987-1993. At the beginning of her career, she was a geriatric rehabilitation social worker at St. Boniface General Hospital.

Dr. Sheri Fandrey

Dr. Sheri Fandrey

Dr. Fandrey joined the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba as a Prevention and Education Consultant in 2003, following 5 years teaching at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Pharmacy. Sheri received her bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and her Ph.D. (Toxicology) from the University of Saskatchewan. Sheri is the Past Chair of the board of Partners Seeking Solutions with Seniors (PSSS) and a board member of the Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada. Sheri remains committed to advancing health professional awareness of substance abuse problems through ongoing relationships with the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association.

Jennifer Reese

Jennifer Reese

Jennifer holds a Bachelor in Recreation Studies from the University of Manitoba, as well as a Health Service Management certificate from Red River College. Jennifer is a Distance Education Instructor for the Recreation for Older Adults Certificate program at Red River College. Jennifer has over 25 years experience in the field of Therapeutic Recreation. Jennifer has worked in various settings in the field of recreation and currently as Recreation Coordinator at Victoria General Hospital. Jennifer likes to use respective humour to engage patients during their journey of self discovery in cognitive games, art and music therapy and relaxation through gentle exercise.

Ellen Locke

Ellen Locke

Ellen has a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Maryland, (1981) and a Bachelor of Recreation Studies from University of Manitoba (1999). Ellen has fifteen years of experience in the Field of Therapeutic Recreation working in Long Term Care, Interim Care, Acute Care and Community settings. Currently, Ellen is the Manager of Recreation Services at Misericordia Health Centre.

Shawn Bugden

Shawn Bugden

Shawn is currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba. He has worked as both a retail and hospital pharmacist and was the Regional Director of Pharmacy for the Central RHA for the past decade. He helped to establish PrISM (Prescription Information Services of Manitoba) and continues to advise PrISM in the evaluation of medications. He also provides support to the Manitoba Provincial Oncology Drug Program in pharmacoeconomic assessment. Shawn is a graduate of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba and has taken further post-graduate training at Oxford University, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Washington.

Leslie Udell

Leslie Udell

CLeslie has worked for Winnserv Inc. for the past twenty-two years, four years of those as the Project Coordinator for a project focused on the issues of aging for people with an intellectual disability. Leslie’s interest in providing quality supports to people with this dual diagnosis have led to her affiliation with the International Association of the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disability – Aging Special Interest Group. She is currently a member of a U.S. National Task Group that is working towards an American strategy for enabling adults with an intellectual disability and dementia to remain in their communities.

Sande Kliewer

Sande Kliewer

Sandra has been working within the Geriatric & Rehabilitation program since 2005. She graduated with her Bachelor in Social Work in 2001 and masters in Social Work from the University of Manitoba in 2010 with a thesis on the analysis of the reasons for emergency room referrals to a geriatric outreach team. Sandra has always been interested in geriatrics and all her placements were in regards to geriatric care (community, palliative care, PCH).

Cheryl Bokhaut

Cheryl Bokhaut

Cheryl has a Masters in Social Work and over 20 years in the geriatric field. She is a Social Worker at St. Boniface Hospital Geriatric Day Hospital. In addition to clinical practice she coordinates the clinical education for Social Work students at St Boniface Hospital.

Kathy Burgetz

Kathy Burgetz

Kathy has a Bachelor of Nursing and Certification in Gerontology. She has a breadth of experience both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. She is currently Clinical Resource Nurse for the St. Boniface Hospital Geriatric Day Hospital.

Dr. Cornelia (Kristel) van Ineveld

Dr. Cornelia (Kristel) van Ineveld

Dr. van Ineveld is an Associate Professor in the Section of Geriatric Medicine . Her clinical practice is mainly based at St. Boniface Hospital as a consultant geriatrician with a focus on day hospital and outreach. In 2008 Dr. van Ineveld was honoured with the Alzheimers Society of Manitoba, Distinguished Member Award.

John Friesen

John Friesen

John is a spiritual care provider at Concordia Place, a home to 140 residents. He is also a member of the Canadian Association of Spiritual Care, which trains and accredits professional care providers in Canada. In his daily work he accompanies the residents suffering with dementia and their families. He also is a resource for staff who works in these areas and has provided education sessions for staff, volunteers and families.

Monique is a speech-language pathologist with 12 years experience working with residents and their caregivers in long term care settings in Texas and Winnipeg. Currently, she is with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority’s PCH-SLP service. She has a Masters in Science in Communication Disorders.

Dr. Colleen Millikin

Dr. Colleen Millikin

Dr. Millikin is a registered psychologist with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Clinical Health Psychology Programme and an assistant professor with the Department of Clinical Health Psychology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba. Her practice is in clinical psychology and neuropsychology. Part of her work involves consultation to personal care homes about behaviour issues.

Dr. Lesley Koven

Dr. Lesley Koven

Dr. Koven is a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical Health Psychology at the University of Manitoba. She obtained her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with an emphasis on geriatrics, from West Virginia University. She practices out of St. Boniface General Hospital, providing psychotherapy and psychological assessments to older adults. She also provides consultation to personal care homes to address the behavioural symptoms of dementia. She served on the Board of the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba for the last six years.

Dr. Craig Omelan

Dr. Craig Omelan

Dr. Omelan attended the University of Manitoba medical school and psychiatric residency. He practised as geriatric psychiatrist since 1993 and has consulted to most regional health authorities in Manitoba. In the late 1990’s he has consulted to the Memory Assessment Clinic. Currently he does consults to Health Sciences Centre, St. Boniface & Concordia hospitals, as well as Deer Lodge Centre,and River East Geriatric Mental Health Team. Dr. Omelan is involved in phase III clinical trials of medication for dementia.

Dawn White

Dawn White - BA, Cert Ed., B Ed., M Ed.

Dawn White is a consultant with the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety. Her background is in education. Dawn has worked as curriculum and resource developer, education consultant, adult educator and facilitator for many years. Dawn is also a patient advocate and strongly believes that “patient safety is everyone’s responsibility”. She is author of the book “Finding Your Voice: Our Journey with Cancer through the Health Care System”.
