Alzheimer Society Of Manitoba Annual Conference

Partners in Care . . .Influencing Care Today and Tomorrow

The 2008 Alzheimer Society of Manitoba Conference – “Partners in Care… Influencing Care Today and Tomorrow” – was held on March 10th and 11th, 2008 at Canad Inns, Polo Park, Winnipeg. In attendance were a wide range of healthcare professionals, including nurses, pharmacists, healthcare aides, social workers, occupational and recreational therapists and family care providers.

Participants had the opportunity to learn and ask questions of locally and nationally recognized experts in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Key messages delivered during the conference include the following:

  • Family caregivers are an integral part of the care team of people with dementia; they also need emotional and practical support especially at critical times during the caregiving journey.
  • People have different views around their own aging, and these views influence their response to the aging of others.
  • Maintenance of oral health is important in the elderly, as there is a connection between oral health and systemic conditions or diseases.
  • Preparing a pre plan can assist in a systematic search for and safe return of a person with dementia who can elope from a long term care facility.
  • Care for a person with dementia requires a collaborative effort between the person, family members, and formal care providers; this partnership is strengthened by leadership that motivates and influences others.

The following are some of the powerpoint presentations during the 2-day Partners in Care Conference.
