Alzheimer Society Of Manitoba Annual Conference 2009

Partners in Care... Unlimited Possibilities

People with dementia and their caregivers find optimism in the unlimited possibilities uncovered through research, innovative practices and changing attitudes.

The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba’s 2009 Conference “Partners in Care … Unlimited Possibilities” was held March 9 and 10. The event drew over 500 attendees - a wide range of healthcare professionals including nurses, pharmacists, health care aides, social workers, occupational and recreational therapists and family care providers.

Participants enjoyed the unlimited possibilities available to gain knowledge and network. They were inspired and motivated by a family careprovider story. Twenty four concurrent sessions and the four plenary presentations by locally and nationally recognized experts in the field of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias provided opportunities to learn and ask questions. Significant messages delivered at the conference include:

  • It is essential to modify communication based on a person with dementia’s capability rather than following the stereotypical cues attributed to older adults.
  • Care of people with dementia may be challenging. Staying physically, mentally and spiritually well can provide the needed strength and courage to pursue the caregiving role.
  • Personhood of individuals with dementia can be enhanced by supportive communication, use of music and art therapies, living actively and placing the person at the centre of all interactions.
  • The caregiver journey for a family member may be different from that of a professional careprovider, but in spite of these differences, working together throughout the progression of the disease paves the way for a better quality of life for the person with dementia.
  • There are various forms of dementias. Some other conditions present similarly to dementia. Knowing the characteristics of these medical and psychological conditions provides a better understanding of how to care for the individuals experiencing distress.
  • Medications are an integral part in the care of people with dementia. Knowledge about the commonly used medications and the medication approval process gives care providers insight into this complex field.
