2. Early Detection of Memory Impairment as the First Step for Effective Treatment

The purpose of this project is early detection of the memory impairment in the hope that early detection will allow more effective treatment to be applied for alleviating or delaying the memory impairment.

Volunteers will be asked to participate in either or both of our recent new technologies for detecting memory impairment; they are: 1- Virtual Reality Psychophysical (VRP) experiments, and 2-Electrovestibulography (EVestG) experiments. Both experiments involve a series of questionnaires on attention, mood, hearing, balance, etc.

The VRP experiments involves playing two simple, engaging and fun computer games, and the EVestG experiments involves recording signals from the ear while you would be sitting in a chair that very slowly tilts and rotates about 30 degrees.

Both studies (experiments) have been approved by the Biomedical Research Ethics Board of the University of Manitoba.

To read more about VRP experiments, you may read from: http://bme.ee.umanitoba.ca/?a=128
To read more on EVestG experiments, you may read from: http://bme.ee.umanitoba.ca/?a=127
You may also watch a short video clip on the EVestG experiments on:

The VRP experiments are performed at the Engineering Building Atrium, University of Manitoba; it will take about 1 to 1.5 hour (1 hour questionnaires and 0.5 hour experiments).

The EVestG experiments are performed at EVestG Lab, Riverview Health Centre, 1 Morley Ave (Administration Building, 4th floor, Room PE-446), Winnipeg, MB; it takes typically 1 hour for recording and 1-1.5hrs for questionnaires.  If you participate on both studies, the questionnaires will be run only once.

The information gathered in these research studies may be published or presented in public forums; however, your name and other identifying information will be kept confidential and will not be revealed.

If you live in Canada, and:

  • are 60+ years old,
  • have been suspected or diagnosed with memory impairment or dementia (these may include MCI or Alzheimer),

you are eligible to participate in these studies. As a means for our appreciation and reimbursement of your transportation expense, every participant will receive a $15 Gift Card for participating in each of the experiments.
